Spaced Out

You're stuck in space, and you're running out of fuel. But the rebels won't stop coming for you. How long can you survive?

Controls

  • W/Up Arrow Key to thrust.
  • A and D/Left and Right Arrow Keys to steer.
  • Space/J to shoot.

Mechanics

This is a top-down survival game, where you pilot a spacecraft, with limited fuel.

  • Thrusting uses fuel. Run out, and you're a sitting duck.
  • Destroying enemy spacecraft refuels your spacecraft.
  • Shooting generates heat. Once at max heat, you won't be able to shoot until your gun cooldowns enough.

Made for Trijam #216, with the theme of Not Enough Resources. This game tries to fit the theme by limiting the amount of fuel the player can have, so the player has to make the most of their available fuel and movements to survive.

Time taken: 6 hours (3 hours each for each developer)

Special Thanks

This game is very much inspired by Luftrausers. Go check it out, it's a cool game!

Nice game!

Aiming is *hard*, but it's fun to try, if frustrating at times.

The resource systems are really well-designed and fit the jam's theme quite well. Both the heat and fuel systems successfully encouraged me to think carefully about when to spend resources and when to hold them back, in a way that felt balanced and fun.

One issue I had was that it took a while to figure out how the different resources were being represented on the screen. The fuel is obvious enough, but the hitpoint/shield system took a little time to figure out, and my first 2-3 tries I didn't even notice that my character was changing color based on the heating system. I did figure it out eventually though, and it worked fine once I understood what was happening.

Also, since "time survived" is how the game is scored, it would be nice to be able to see that information during play (I did the same thing and forgot to put in a timer for my game).

Overall, great work!

Yeah, we'd have liked to make the UI better to better show the different resources, among many other things. But we ran out of time, so we had to cut corners where we could to make it in time.

Anyway, thanks a lot for playing and for the feedback!
